Biogas is one of the most widely used alternative sources for the production of renewable energy. It comes from the fermentation, in the absence of oxygen and at a controlled temperature, of organic matrices (from animals or vegetables) by numerous bacteria. This degradation process is called: anaerobic digestion.
The biogas is composed from 45 to 70% of methane and the remaining part of carbon dioxide (other substances present in a smaller percentage are carbon monoxide, nitrogen, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide).
The biogas produced has a high calorific value and the digested output, which looks like a liquid product, can be used as a natural fertilizer in crops.
